Leeds Safeguarding Adults Board has again joined with local and national organisations to deliver two weeks of free learning events to strengthen knowledge and understanding of safeguarding topics.

Week one coincides with Safeguarding Adults Week (16–20 November), hosted nationally by the Ann Craft Trust, which brings extra opportunities to reflect, learn, and share good practice. We have included their events.

Monday 16th November, 10 am

This one hour webinar will give an overview of Dogs Trust Freedom, a temporary dog fostering service supporting people fleeing domestic abuse. It will cover what the service is, how it works and how to make a referral. It will also give an overview of pets and domestic abuse, and the link between abuse to animals and people.

Tuesday 17th November, 10 am

This one hour webinar by Safer Leeds

  • Explain what stalking is, including cyber stalking
  • Increase understanding regarding the prevalence of stalking and how it is linked to Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs)
  • Give an understanding of the impact of stalking on victim-survivors and the behaviours they may display
  • Look at services and support that is available to people experiencing stalking

Tuesday 17th November, 2 pm

This two hour webinar by Basis Yorkshire will explore issues to consider when responding to safeguarding risk of sex workers and/or those who are sexually exploited including barriers to engagement such as the risk of conflating exploitation with sex work and factors contributing to safeguarding risk.

Wednesday 18th November, 10 am

This one hour webinar by Advonet will help you understand what Care Act advocacy is and how it is applied during safeguarding processes. 

It will cover eligibility criteria, as well as what you can expect from an advocate and what the advocate can expect from others.

Wednesday 18th November, 3 pm

Join West Yorkshire Police for a 90 minute informative session exploring cyber abuse, online safety, and the risks people face in today's digital world. The session will cover common forms of cyber abuse, including online harassment, scams, phishing, and cyber-enabled crime, while providing practical advice on how to stay safe online.

Thursday 19th November, 10 am 

This 75 minute by West Yorkshire Financial Exploitation & Abuse team (WYFEAT) session delves into how financial abuse is covered under The Care Act 2014 and provides practical measures to safeguard service users from scams and doorstep crime. The training includes real case studies from victims in West Yorkshire to illustrate the team's work and emphasizes the importance of changing the stigma associated with being scammed. Additionally, the session explains the role of WYFEAT, the referral process, and the support available to victims.

The Mental Capacity Act provides a clear presumption of capacity, yet practitioners are often faced with situations where decision-making is far from straightforward. 

This 90 minute webinar explores the legal, ethical and practice dilemmas that arise when individuals make decisions that appear unsafe, high-risk or difficult to understand. Using case examples and current legal principles, participants will strengthen their legal literacy and professional confidence in navigating complex unwise decision-making, balancing autonomy, risk, safeguarding responsibilities and human rights. 

The session will focus on defensible decision-making and the practical application of the MCA in challenging real-world scenarios.

Tuesday 24th November, 2pm

Cuckooing is a form of exploitation where an individual or a criminal gang target the home of a vulnerable person so they can use the property for criminal purposes.

Wednesday 25th November, 9.30 am

This is a three hour briefing, looking at the Risk Assessment Process and how MARACs work in Leeds.

Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conferences are led by the Front Door Safeguarding Hub to address the needs of high-risk victims of Domestic Violence and Abuse. Any frontline staff working closely with high risk clients can refer a case for consideration to a MARAC meeting. This briefing will include:

  • background on the extent and nature of domestic violence
  • what is a MARAC?
  • understanding different levels of risk and safety planning
  • what factors influence the risk involved for victim survivors
  • a detailed look at the Leeds MARAC and DASH risk assessment tool

An Introduction to Health Protection is free 2 hour face-to-face training by Leeds City Council's Health Protection Team. It provides an overview of key health protection topics, including weather health and air quality, vaccinations and infections. It includes group activities and reflective conversations. Participants receive a personalised certificate.

This two hour online training session gives an overview of Safeguarding Adults specifically aimed at volunteers in Leeds.  It covers:
  • what safeguarding adults is and why this is important
  • the role and responsibility of the volunteer in safeguarding adults
  • different types of abuse, and what signs to potentially look out for
  • how to raise a concern and what happens next

Friday 27th November, 3 pm

Delivered by the National Centre for Domestic Abuse Team, this one hour training session is for anyone who comes across people affected by domestic abuse as part of their work. 

NCDV has a team of dedicated trainers located around the country. They provide interactive training either remotely or in-house completely free of charge. Training will cover: 

  • about NCDV and how we help you to help victims
  • the legal definition of Domestic Abuse
  • the 4 Protection Orders NCDV specialise in obtaining, namely Non Molestation Orders, Occupation Orders, Prohibited Steps Orders and the new DAPO (Domestic Abuse Protection Orders)
  • how to refer and the feedback loop that keeps you updated throughout.
  • the application criteria – who can apply and when?
  • how the four orders compare with other criminal and civil Orders
  • the benefits of Civil Protective Orders
  • the role of Legal Aid and options for victims who are not eligible
  • the case building, court and service process
  • the Police ASSIST database (police only)
